Certified Pharmacy Technician:
Assists the pharmacist in dispensing, delivery and retrieval of medications.
May assist Pharmacist in hospital, clinic, home care, long-term care, mail order, managed care or retail pharmacy performing a variety of duties. This position may also be found in research, education and the pharmaceutical industry.
Receives and screens prescription medication orders for completeness and accuracy. Mixes pharmaceutical preparations using proper aseptic techniques, fills bottles or other container with prescribed medications, and types labels for bottles, using proper packaging techniques. Collects, organizes and evaluates information to assist pharmacists in serving patients. Prepares and distributes medications in a variety of health system settings. Provides drug information and education, as needed. Receives and stores incoming supplies and assists in stocking shelves, checking prices and maintaining inventory. Counts stock and enters data in computer to maintain inventory records. Collects payment or initiates billing for pharmacy services and goods. Cleans equipment and sterilizes glassware according to prescribed methods. Types and files reports, and completes forms as directed. This position typically requires completion of a pharmacy technician training program and current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
