Assesses results from conducting a variety of psychodiagnostic examinations ordered by the courts to provide forensic assessment to determine competency to stand trial, or to evaluate other mental health conditions that could affect legal proceedings. Provides consultation to court officials regarding the psychological state of individuals. Appears in courts of law as an expert witness, attesting to findings regarding an individual's competency to stand trial or other forensic issues. Reviews psychological information relative to legal requirements for determination of competency to stand trial for an alleged illegal act, formulates opinion, and makes diagnosis.
Prepares written reports for the courts detailing psychological findings upon which conclusions and recommendations are based. Interviews subject matter experts, family members of the accused, witnesses, police officers, and others to assist in reaching conclusions regarding the psychological condition of the accused at the time of the offense. Maintains current knowledge of laws and acts that affect the field of forensic psychology. Conducts research regarding specific psychological conditions and their forensic relationship and publishes findings in scientific journals. Presents information regarding forensic psychology to various groups and professional associations. Formulates treatment plans, screens referrals for psychological testing, conducts psychological testing, and provides consultation and training to other staff for a caseload of patients assigned to a forensic psychiatry center. Provides cognitive, behaviorally oriented, or other types of individual therapy to patients. Provides expert witness testimony in courts of law as a Certified Consulting Forensic Examiner.
