Medical Transcriber: Transcribes dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative materials in accordance with specific standards for medical records. Uses computer or word processor and understands medical terminology to accurately transcribe dictated recording or written notes into a format that is clear and comprehensible for the reader. Edits and corrects as necessary for accuracy and clarity.
Responsible for compliance with legal and ethical standards for confidentiality. Formats, edits, and checks for mistakes in translation, punctuation, grammar, medical errors, and consistency. Reviews reports for mistakes or inconsistencies in medical report and checks back with dictator in order to correct information. Examples of documents produced include discharge summaries, history and physical examination reports, operating room reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, referral letters, and other documents related to patient files. May require Certified Medical Transcription certificate, obtained through completion of a one-year certificate program. May perform variety of clerical duties.
