Analyses the chemical nature and make-up of substances using a variety of modern analytical techniques, methods, and high technology instrumentation. Analyzes samples from various sources to provide information on compounds or quantities of compounds present, using analytical techniques and instrumentation, such as gas and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ion chromatography, electrochromatography ,and spectroscopy (infrared and ultraviolet, amongst others). Interprets data and adheres to strict guidelines on documentation when recording data. Reports scientific results and develops new analytical techniques for the analysis of drugs and other chemicals. Confers with scientists and engineers regarding research, and prepares technical papers and reports. Prepares standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products, and tests. Serves as a liaison with customers, staff, and suppliers. Maintains awareness of and remains up to date with health and safety issues in all aspects of the work undertaken. Senior analysts are likely to be involved in preparing the documentation for product license applications, e.g., with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) or the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), setting the specifications for finished products and possibly investigating the reaction mechanisms of new molecules.
