Assesses extent of medical emergency at scene and establishes priority for emergency medical care via radio communications with appropriate physicians. Participates as a member of the emergency response unit in providing fire suppression and prevention services, medical services, hazardous spill response, and specialized rescue operations. Assumes responsibility for all phases of patient transportation. Renders BLS/ALS emergency medical stabilization as trained and qualified. Participates in medivac requirements as needed. Prepares all records and reports pertaining to the EMS function. Rescues incapacitated personnel. Assists with testing and servicing emergency rescue equipment. Operates and maintains emergency response vehicles, equipment, and radios. Receives, documents, and dispatches appropriate personnel to all trouble calls and alarms to determine the source. Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures. Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance, using ax, chisel, crowbar, electric saw, core cutter, and other power equipment. Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants. Administers first aid and artificial respiration to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke. Communicates with superior during fire, using portable two-way radio. Inspects buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances. Performs assigned duties in maintaining apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds, and hydrants.
