Job Description:

Assists Recreational Therapist in improving the functioning of patients/residents who have physical, cognitive, social, emotional, developmental, or age-related needs in hospitals, out-patient clinics, and other health care or assisted living facilities. Leads and encourages interest and involvement in individual and group recreation activities, such as arts, crafts, walks, sports, games, and hobbies. Greets new arrivals to activities, explains the facility rules, and introduces them to other participants. Demonstrates use of materials and equipment. Requires a Recreational Therapy Assistant license or certification. Follows the organization standards and policies regarding risk management, health and safety, infection control, etc.; anticipates hazards and takes appropriate measures. Adapts or modifies activities to match interests and abilities of patients/residents. Documents patient/resident participation and progress in the recreation programs through progress notes completed according to facility standards. Communicates behavioral observations of patients/residents to other staff and team members. Collects assessment information, and works with supervisor to complete and update assessments and to develop treatment plans of care. Participates in discharge planning and completes discharge summaries. Keeps activity space clean and orderly, and assures activities equipment and supplies and stored properly when not in use. Provides a positive, supportive atmosphere during therapy sessions, and provides emotional support to families. Participates in staff and team meetings and projects as assigned.
