Job Description:

Advises and provides counseling, grief therapy, and grief support to help meet individual’s social and emotional needs in relation to the impact of a terminal illness or of the grief from losing a loved one. Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources. Evaluates individual’s needs for counseling or other grief support services. Provides individual counseling and group support therapy to bereaved individuals, offering compassion, advice, and strategies to cope. Supports individuals and families dealing with the reality of terminal illness, working with the terminally ill patient, to help him/her come to terms with his circumstances through communication or therapy, and working with the loved ones of the terminally ill patient to help them cope with enduring the loss. Advises individual and provides information about community and spiritual resources, available publications, financial counseling, and other services to aid in coping with death loss. Counsels individually or in group setting, applying therapeutic and evaluative techniques to resolve or mitigate survivor's feelings of grief, depression, anger, loneliness, or sorrow. Attends classes, seminars, workshops, and professional meetings, and reads grief-related publications to develop new grief therapy techniques and improve counseling skills. Conducts group training sessions to explain and present therapeutic methodology and grief support material to community, clergy, hospices, hospitals, and schools. Schedules guest speakers to lecture at group training sessions to broaden knowledge of methods of accepting grief reactions caused by disasters and deaths occurring under traumatic circumstances, such as suicide, murder, and accidents.
