Job Description:

Drafts and draws up specifications and instructions for installation of voltage transformers, overhead or underground cables, and related electrical equipment used to conduct electrical energy from transmission lines or high-voltage distribution lines to consumers. Uses principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems. Examines work order request to determine type of service, such as lighting or power, demanded by installation. Prepares rough sketch of location after visiting site of proposed installation. Work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that of engineers. Takes measurements, such as street dimensions, distances to be spanned by wire and cable, or space available, in existing buildings and underground vaults that affect installation and arrangement of equipment. Estimates materials, equipment, and incidentals needed for installation. Draws master sketch showing relation of proposed installation to existing facilities. Makes other drawings, such as those pertaining to wiring connections or cross sections of underground cables, as required for instructions to installation crew. Consults power distribution engineer on difficulties encountered. May draft sketches to scale. May estimate labor and material costs, using price lists and records on previous projects. May inspect completed installation of electrical equipment and related building circuitry to verify conformance with specifications.
