Job Description:

Supports the inpatient care team under supervision. Assists more specialized personnel with housekeeping, patient transport, nutrition distribution, unit clerical, and materials distribution functions. Does not perform direct patient care duties such as taking vital signs. Obtains necessary equipment and supplies from Sterile Processing, Cart Staging, and other departments, and ensures that equipment is returned to appropriate location following usage. Cleans, washes, and sterilizes utensils, instruments, and other patient care related equipment. Identifies or responds to reports of equipment in need of repair or maintenance, notifies person or department responsible for action, and follows up until resolved. Straightens, cleans, sanitizes, and arranges patients rooms and furniture and equipment after discharge and at other times when necessary, and cleans and straightens other non-patient areas. Answers unit phones and assists callers or takes accurate messages. Writes entries in logs and other records as required. Delivers and picks up specimens and other supplies and materials from various hospital departments including, but not limited to, pharmacy, sterile processing, and biomedical, and runs other errands as needed. Changes sharps containers and places them in appropriate area for removal. Assists with passing and pick-up of patient meal trays. Answers patient call lights and delivers messages. Transports or escorts patients as necessary using wheelchairs, gurneys, or other assistive devices. Documents in unit log when required. Provides back-up support to administrative and clerical personnel as workload permits, performing such duties as answering the telephone, directing visitors, and stocking supplies.
