Job Description:

Assesses and treats individuals with mental, emotional, or substance abuse problems, including abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs. Counsels individuals, couples, families, and groups to help them overcome a range of psychological and emotional concerns. Uses personal treatment plans and a variety of non-medical-based treatments to address the client's thought processes, feelings, and behavior, understand inner conflicts, and find new ways to deal with and alleviate distress. Conducts a series of psychosocial assessments and interviews with client(s) to assess needs, explore issues, and build trust. Encourages the client(s) to talk about and explore their feelings and behavior. Provides individual, family, and/or group therapy to adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapies, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapies, humanistic and integrative psychotherapies, systemic therapies, hypno-psychotherapy, and/or experiential constructivist therapies, depending on the theoretical models adopted and the therapy practiced. Evaluates therapy outcomes and writes reports. Keeps abreast of developments in theory and research. Networks within the health professional community and other potential business areas to maintain continuity of work and client base. May lead group sessions with individuals undergoing therapy in a clinical setting. May lead group sessions in a training capacity for other professionals, such as social workers, nurses, and teachers, who are interested in learning more about how groups work and how they function within them. May be supervised or supervise other Psychotherapists, enabling the therapist to raise personal issues and professional concerns that arise from his/her work with another appropriately qualified professional.
