Job Description:

Develops new products and processes in areas such as medical, crop production and agriculture, industrial, or environmental biotechnology. Uses microorganisms of plants and animals to perform specific industrial or manufacturing processes. Develops new medicines and medical treatment options, helps with environmental concerns, develops new plants or animals, and/or enhances already existing plants and animals. Produces certain drugs, synthetic hormones, and bulk foodstuffs as well as the bioconversion of organic waste and the use of genetically altered bacteria in the cleanup of oil spills. Uses knowledge of plants, animals, microbial sciences, biochemistry, genetics, and computing to find solutions to problems within areas such as agriculture, the environment, the food industry, and medicine. Studies human genetics, viruses, plants, fungi, and bacteria in the medical biotechnology field to discover the nature of inherited diseases or cancers. Develops therapies, vaccines, and hormones to treat the genetic cause of a disease rather than the symptoms. Uses techniques, such as cell culture and genetic modification, to produce medicines. Produces and clones enzymes, in the industrial biotechnology field, which can be used to manufacture and preserve food and drink, such as beer, cheese, and bread. Creates biological detergents and dyes for the textile industry. Improves animal feed and develops crops, in the agricultural biotechnology field, to be more resistant to pests, and genetically modifies crops to increase productivity. Develops microorganisms and plants, in the environmental biotechnology field, to clean land or water that is polluted with sewage, industrial waste, and agricultural chemicals. Creates alternative renewable sources of energy, such as biodiesel. Produces environmentally-friendly raw materials for industry, such as biodegradable plastics from plant starches.
