Job Description:

Teaches academic and living skills in schools, institutions, or other specialized facilities to students who have learning, mental, emotional, and/or physical disabilities. Plans curriculum and develops lessons and other instructional materials according to achievement levels of students. Modifies teaching strategies to meet each student’s individual needs. Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individual educational program for students who are at different learning ability levels, including educable, trainable, and severely impaired, promoting their educational, physical, and social development. Instructs students in all academic subjects, utilizing various teaching techniques, such as phonetics, multisensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning. Uses special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to increase motivation and improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, memory, and social and emotional development. Teaches socially acceptable behavior, utilizing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement. Instructs students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and economic self-sufficiency, such as hygiene, safety, and food preparation. Provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate. Observes, evaluates, and prepares reports on progress of students. Meets with parents to accept and develop skills in dealing with student's learning impairment and to provide support and guidance in using community resources. May work as consultant, teach in self-contained classroom, or teach in resource room. May administer and interpret results of ability and achievement tests.
