Job Description:

Controls the management of health care data and records containing information about symptoms, examinations, test results and reports, diagnoses, treatment plans, and treatment outcomes. Creates health record indexes or storage and retrieval systems to collect, classify, store, and analyze patient information in hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, outpatient care centers, or hospices. Compiles, codes, indexes, checks, and analyzes permanent medical records of patients, and provides data for research or cost control and care improvement efforts, all in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements of the health care system. Keeps patients’ medical records organized, computerized, and maintained; and ensures they are accurate and complete. Assembles patients' health information, and ensures that medical charts and forms are complete and that medical charts and forms are properly identified and authenticated, maintaining the integrity of records. Inputs information into and retrieves information from the computer, and uses computer programs to tabulate and analyze data. Protects the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained. Prepares statistical reports, narrative reports, or graphic presentations of information, such as tumor registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers, or other users. Compiles medical care and census data for statistical reports on things such as diseases treated, surgery performed, or use of hospital beds.
