Reconstructs record of extinct cultures, especially preliterate cultures. Unearths archaeological sites, documents, itemizes, and studies unearthed items. Researches, categorizes, and interprets artifacts, architectural features, and types of structures recovered by excavation in order to determine age and cultural identity. Identifies, classifies, preserves, and reconstructs archeological sites and artifacts. Establishes chronological sequence of development of each culture from simpler to more advanced levels. Analyzes findings, reconstructs earlier cultures, studies their histories, and determines their influence on modern life. May specialize in study of literate periods of major civilizations in Near and Middle East. May specialize in study of past Colombian history of the Americas.
