Job Description:

Assists in developing and implementing the anesthesia care plan, functioning as a specialty Physician Assistant under the direction of a licensed Anesthesiologist. Prepares, operates, and maintains anesthesia equipment such as ventilators, cell savers, balloon pumps, patient monitors, blood gas analyzers, arterial lines, and CVP lines. Typically found in medical centers and requires an undergraduate premedical background. Most organizations require certification from the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA). Obtains medical history and preoperative data from patient and conducts a preliminary physical examination to include routine blood sampling. Records data and monitors the patient through all stages of anesthesia. Assists the medical staff with technical problems related to the delivery of anesthesia to patients to include setting up monitors, troubleshooting monitor malfunctions, and adjusting anesthetic levels as needed. Interprets data from advanced monitoring techniques and adjusts life support systems under guidance from the Anesthesiologist. Provides recovery room care to include post-operative pain relief and monitoring. Assists the anesthesia care team in providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with approved emergency protocols. May perform airway management and drug administration for induction and maintenance of anesthesia. May assist in the administration and monitoring of regional and peripheral nerve blocks and in the administration of intravenous fluids and cardiovascular drugs. May be responsible for pre-testing anesthesia delivery systems and operating patient monitors and support devices for critical cardiac, pulmonary, and neurological systems.
