Job Description:

Researches and investigates the emission, transmission, amplification, detection, and modulation of light, and designs and develops photonic technology to be used in fields such as telecommunications, medicine, and defense, as well as in the manufacturing and construction industries. Combines and applies knowledge of mathematical, scientific, and engineering theory and methods to use light to generate energy, detect information, or transmit information. Adjusts, modifies, tests, and integrates photonic equipment components and systems, and directs others in the testing of systems such as fiber optic, laser, holographic, and optical imaging. Specializes in solving problems relating to light sources, with a focus on modulating light sources and controlling the light's wavelength, intensity, and duration. Measures light effectively using a spectrometer, which is a highly sensitive instrument that measures characteristics of light. May specialize in refining the purity of optical fibers, as impurities in optical fibers can contribute to energy loss. May create designs of optical fibers with exact dimensions and chemical compositions or develop methods to reduce production costs for making the fiber optics material. May work with semiconductor laser systems, which are used primarily in telecommunications equipment, telephones, and computers.
