Job Description:

Researches, documents, writes, refines, and presents accurate and unbiased news stories for national, regional, and local newspapers or magazines, including politics, sports, arts and culture, science, business, entertainment, and human interest news stories. Seeks out and investigates stories through contacts, press releases, and other media. Interviews people in a range of different circumstances. Establishes and maintains contacts and sources to maintain a flow of news, such as police and emergency services, local council, community groups, health trusts, press officers from a variety of organizations, and the general public for use in current and future stories. Checks facts and verifies the information received by various sources. Attends a variety of events, such as press conferences, council meetings, court proceedings, launch parties, sports events, and talent contests, asking questions and reporting on events. Records interviews and meetings using shorthand or electronic/technical equipment. Answers the phones on the news desk and reacts to breaking news stories. Liaises and works closely with the news team, photographers, editors, and designers. Produces concise and accurate copy according to the newspaper or magazine's house style and to strict deadlines—daily newspapers may have several each day. Writes short 'fillers' to entertain, and researches and writes longer feature articles, sometimes for subsidiary publications and supplements. Creates and uploads news content for the newspaper or magazine’s website. Works long hours, nearly living on-line reporting or real-time blogging when covering important events, a growing area of work, especially on national newspapers.
