Job Description:

Oversees and supervises an animal facility, such as a shelter, providing necessary services for humane feeding, watering, and caring for animals in the facility. Supervises and coordinates the animal care staff; develops, plans, and schedules care and feeding programs; and assists in the development of policies and procedures for animal use. Supervises Animal Care Technicians, community service workers, and volunteers, and assigns duties to them. Sets standards for and monitors conduct of shelter employees to ensure that humane philosophy is projected to public and implemented in care of animals. Ensures cages and fences are maintained and that inside and outside of all kennels, cages, other animal enclosures, and surrounding walls and floors are cleaned, disinfected, safe, and suitable to house animals on a daily basis. Inspects all cages and animals several times a day to ensure that any animal waste is picked up as soon as possible and that all litter pans are clean and kept clean throughout the day. Ensures door/kennel cards are displayed prominently on the cages and that animals removed from cages or kennels are returned to the proper location. Checks the ID number on the door card against the number on the animal’s collar and ensures all information about the animal matches. Provides continual monitoring of animals housed in the facility and reports any signs of illness or injury to the animals or staff through the established reporting process. Investigates accidents, determines causes, reports findings, and takes appropriate actions. Delivers animals to the euthanasia holding room and/or the euthanasia department, making certain that the right animal is being delivered by checking the door/kennel card against the animal’s collar for matching ID numbers. Checks inventory, ordering, stocking, and maintaining stock levels of various supplies. Stocks food items for the animals and assists in the transfer of donated food to the food room.
