Obtains subsamples from layers of bulk sample and grinds sample to increase homogeneity and reduce particle size, using laboratory work aids, such as knife, probe, mortar, and pestle. Applies heat, dilute acid, or other methods to remove interfering materials from bulk sample. Mounts bulk sample or air filter membrane on glass laboratory slide. Analyzes and counts fibers in air filter sample, using phase contrast microscope, polarized light microscope, or transmission electron microscope, following U.S. government-approved methods. Analyzes bulk sample to identify and estimate concentration of asbestos in sample, using phase contrast microscope, polarized light microscope, x-ray diffractometer, or scanning or transmission electron microscope, applying knowledge of asbestos optical characteristics and test procedures. Calculates percentage of asbestos in sample. Interprets test results, using statistical methodologies, and cites legal standards for asbestos concentration. Discusses test results with customer and prepares written reports. Calibrates microscopes and cleans lenses regularly to ensure accurate results. May produce and develop photomicrographs of samples.
