Job Description:

Specializes in studying brain behavior relationships under very specific circumstances which are both controlled and standardized, using tests which have been validated and which have been shown to have acceptable levels of sensitivity and specificity. Specializes in research and/or in evaluating and treating people who are thought to have something wrong with the way in which their nervous system is functioning from possibly being injured by a disease, disorder, or accident. Collaborates with psychiatrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, and other medical specialists as a team to coordinate a patient's care. Conducts research to better understand the functioning of the brain by studying brain damaged patients and comparing them to patients who have not suffered brain damage. Administers psychological tests and performs assessments to diagnose specific disorders of the brain, which most often result in problems with thinking, emotions, and/or behavior. Studies ways to measure recovery from brain damage as well as strategies to rehabilitate people with brain damage and improve their care. Provides psychotherapy to patients with brain damage and tries to understand ways in which a patient's environment improves or worsens the patient's overall condition. Evaluates patients using an assessment technique in which a fixed battery of tests is given and in which the physician only wants to know what functions are impaired and what functions are not impaired; using an assessment technique in which a fixed battery of tests is given, but, in this method, there is a hierarchical arrangement of items within each subtest so that if a function is impaired, the level at which it is impaired can be determined; and/or using the flexible battery approach where the physician gives a group of tests allegedly picked for just the particular patient. May study the functioning of the spine. May teach courses in colleges and universities about neuropsychology, intelligence testing, personality testing, and/or other topics. May work in the court system as forensic neuropsychologists, using their knowledge to help in forensic issues, and testify that a patient's performance on a series of tests shows that he/she suffered a brain injury that resulted in significant deficits in thinking abilities after an accident where someone is charged with a crime.
