Cable Installer Telecommunications:
Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, disconnects, reconnects, and upgrades cable television, high-speed Internet, and/or digital phone service lines and equipment for residential and business customers, keeping cable systems operating efficiently. Receives and reviews work orders and obtains necessary material to complete each order. Prepares customer's home or business for cable reception by connecting the cable system to one or more television sets or to one or more computers for high-speed Internet service.
Discusses the costs and installation options for customers' homes or businesses. Determines possibilities that will satisfy their needs within construction limitations. Uses electrician's tools to install lines and test equipment in new construction as well as existing buildings. Explains use of equipment, including any necessary cable boxes or other accessories. Works with crew to maintain cable telecommunications transmission and distribution systems and associated hardware. Investigates system to isolate cause of service interruption and tests repairs. Responds to repair service calls to determine whether problem is caused by the cable equipment or indicates malfunction of receiving equipment. Makes any necessary repairs and adjusts equipment to optimize reception. Maintains a safe working environment. Maintains current product knowledge. Maintains, secures, and accounts for equipment inventories, including modems, converters, drop equipment, and other equipment issued by company or cable system. Keeps log of service calls, time spent, parts used, and nature of problems. Offers suggestions to supervisor about improvements to area lines in cases of recurring problems. May be responsible for servicing feeder lines, which connect the main cable to small groups of homes or businesses, and drop lines, which are the direct cable lines to the customer's site. May collect installation fees and explain service operation to subscriber. May communicate with supervisor to receive instructions or technical advice and to report problems to be repaired by technician. May assist supervisor with daily operations.
