Plans, implements, and monitors recreational therapy programs for patients. Directs the programs and staff of the recreational therapy department. Typically requires an advanced degree in a related field and five years of recreational therapy experience. Certification may be required.

Establishes and implements guidelines for recreational therapy programs in areas of theater, games, and music. Determines the extent and nature of recreation therapy services needed, identifies methods and resources for implementing services, and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the recreational service delivery system. Monitors and evaluates service activities. Plans and develops staff in-service training and conducts orientation for new personnel. Plans and schedules work for the department, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space, and facilities for performance of duties. Prepares reports and presents appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Hires, manages, and motivates a qualified recreational therapy staff. Prepares and manages the departmental budget.
