Milling/Planing Machine Operator:
Mills flat or curved surfaces on metal work pieces, such as machine, tool, or die parts, analyzing specifications, and selecting tooling, according to knowledge of milling procedures, tending variety of milling machines.
Positions and
secures work piece in fixture or feeding device.
Starts machine and
turns handwheel to feed work piece to cutter or vice versa, or engages automatic feeding mechanism. Turns valve handle to direct flow of coolant against cutter and work piece. Observes machine operation, and removes and inspects machined work piece to verify conformance to specifications, using instruments, such as gauges, calipers, micrometers, and templates. Records production output. May change worn cutters, using wrenches. May tend machine that mills work piece according to programmed cycle. May turn controls to adjust feed rate of work piece or speed of cutting tool. May mill nonmetallic materials. (Source: eDOT Job Description)
