Studies the structure and activity of macromolecules and the macromolecular mechanisms found in living things, such as the molecular nature of the gene and its mechanisms of gene replication, mutation, and expression. Studies, characterizes, isolates, and manipulates the molecular components of living cells and organisms in order to understand the interactions between systems in cells, including the interactions between DNA, the repository of genetic information; RNA, a close relative of DNA whose functions range from serving as a temporary working copy of DNA to actual structural and enzymatic functions as well as a functional and structural part of the translational apparatus; and protein, the major structural and enzymatic type of molecule in cells, and learning how these interactions are regulated.
Performs routine and specialized methods in molecular biology. Performs testing assays using appropriate laboratory skills in liquid and material handling. Evaluates test results to include recognizing and reporting unusual test results. Analyzes complex data solves problems. Maintains an accurate and complete record of all testing. Develops nucleic acid based assays, calibrators, and controls. Ensures compliance for all inspections to include Federal, State, county, and local regulations. Assists with reviewing and updating standard operating procedures to ensure quality control records are current and complete. Assists in the research, preparation, and publication of laboratory results in scientific groups. Uses specific techniques native to molecular biology and combines these with techniques and ideas from genetics and biochemistry. Studies how genetic information can be encoded in molecules called DNA, and how this information can be used to direct the synthesis of all of the other kinds of molecules that make up living things. Studies how DNA can be changed and how changes can cause disease. Maintains knowledge of all current theories and principles required to effectively perform duties. Maintains excellent communication with Laboratory Services management. May be researchers, technicians, or teachers. May develop new methods to diagnose and treat disease, new agricultural crops, or new ways to detect and remove pollutants from the environment. May serve as scientific advisors to business people, lawyers, or government officials. (Source: eDOT Job Description) [-] Less
