Environmental Technician:
Develops methods and devices used in the prevention, control, and correction of environmental hazards, working closely with environmental engineers and scientists. Uses principles and theories of science and engineering to solve technical problems. Work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that of scientists and engineers. Companies prefer at least a two-year associate's degree in engineering technology with college courses in science, engineering, mathematics, and courses in field of specialty; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.
Inspects and maintains equipment affecting air pollution and recycling. Conducts tests and field investigations to obtain data for use by environmental, engineering, and scientific personnel in determining sources and methods of controlling pollutants in air, water, and soil, utilizing knowledge of agriculture, chemistry, meteorology, and principles of applied technologies. Performs quantitative and qualitative analyses according to prescribed standards to determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances. Collects samples of gases from smokestacks, and collects other air samples and meteorological data to assist in evaluation of atmospheric pollutants. Collects water samples from streams and lakes, or raw, semi-processed or processed water, industrial waste water, or water from other sources to assess pollution problem. Collects soil, silt, or mud to determine chemical composition and nature of pollutants. Prepares sample for testing, records data, and prepares summaries and charts for review. Sets monitoring equipment to provide flow of information. Installs, operates, and performs routine maintenance on gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reaction systems, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation. May inspect water and wastewater treatment systems to ensure pollution control requirements are met. May operate fixed or mobile monitoring or data collection station. May conduct bacteriological or other tests related to research in environmental or pollution control activity. May collect and analyze engine exhaust emissions to determine type and amount of pollutants.
