Geriatrics Physician:
Specializes in the care of older adults.
With special training in the care of older adults, the Geriatrics Physician coordinates all aspects of medical and health care to assist the patient in maintaining good health and independence. Prescribes medication and recommends dietary and activity program, as indicated by diagnosis. Coordinates all aspects of overall care but refers patient to medical specialist when indicated. Treats chronic or long term illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and arthritis which require medical management for an extended time. Provides patient education to teach the patient how to take several medications at once, to take an appropriate dose and not too much or too little for that person's needs, and to avoid side effects from interactions of multiple medications. Provides complete, personal, confidential evaluations to determine medical needs and address emotional, family and social concerns. Evaluates patient dementia and other memory problems and determines the best possible continuing treatment and care for the patient.
