Researches,
designs machinery,
devises processing techniques, and
directs technical work concerned with ceramic products such as glassware, automobile and aircraft engine components, fiber-optic communication lines, tile, electric insulators, and other related products. Excludes supervisory and paraprofessional positions.
Directs testing of physical, chemical, and heat-resisting properties of materials, such as clays and silicas. Analyzes results of tests to determine combinations of materials that will improve quality of products. Conducts research into methods of processing, forming, and firing of clays to develop new ceramic products, such as ceramic machine tools, refractories for space vehicles, and for use in glass and steel furnaces. Designs equipment and apparatus for forming, firing, and handling products. Coordinates testing activities of finished products for characteristics, such as texture, color, durability, glazing, and refractory properties. May specialize in one branch of ceramic production, such as brick, glass crockery, tile, pipe, or refractories.
