Highways Engineer:
Plans, designs, and oversees highway engineering projects through planning, research, and/or construction. Improves the way that people travel on highways, ensuring that it is safe, sustainable, and as environmentally friendly as possible through various means, which may include devising effective traffic management systems, coordinating local transport access, and bridging infrastructure, parking, road safety, cycle networks, and traffic flow systems analysis.
Analyses and monitors current road systems, analyzing traffic patterns and keeping abreast of the construction of new buildings that might cause future traffic problems. Liaises with local councils and police on accidents, traffic flow, noise, and demand or use of roads in local areas, and strategizes ways in which road systems can be improved. Designs new road layouts and traffic flow systems using software packages such as CAD or AutoCAD. Liaises with other contractors. Ensures bridges, lighting, and roads meet the approved regulations and standards. Strategizes highway and traffic improvements so that they satisfy local authorities expectations, are cost effective, fit for purpose, and are environmentally sustainable. Finds new ways and means for building highways, investigating new machines and technology, new pavement designs, and improved maintenance operations. Supervises contractors who build new roads, working on the site to check the quality of the work.
