Applies the sciences of soil and rock mechanics, engineering geology, and other disciplines to civil engineering design and construction of structures, such as high-rise buildings, bridges, houses, and commercial buildings, while working to preserve and protect the physical environment. Investigates existing subsurface conditions and materials, assesses risks posed by site conditions, designs earthworks and structure foundations, and monitors site conditions, earthwork, and foundation construction. Provides geotechnical analysis and coordinates geotechnical engineering projects. Coordinates personnel, equipment, and technical experts required to complete the assigned projects. Plans field investigation scopes of work. Conducts or oversees site investigations, including drilling, sampling, coring, and cone penetrometer testing. Conducts or oversees conventional geotechnical laboratory testing. Conducts geotechnical analysis, including bearing capacity, slope stability, and settlement analysis using widely available computer programs. Investigates soil, rock, fault distribution, and bedrock properties on and below an area of interest to determine their engineering properties including how they will interact with, on, or in a proposed construction. Assesses potential risk to humans, property, and the environment from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, soil liquefaction, debris flows, and rock falls. Determines and designs the type of foundations, including deep and shallow foundations; retaining and containment structures, including earth-filled dams and retaining walls; earthworks, including embankments, tunnels, dikes, levees, channels, reservoirs, deposition of hazardous waste, and sanitary landfills; and/or pavement subgrades required for the intended structures to be built. Participates in planning, design, and construction of wharves, marinas, and jetties and in the planning, design, and construction of foundation and anchor systems for offshore structures, such as oil platforms. Inspects and monitors work being done. Interfaces with architects, engineers, and building inspectors. Writes proposals and participates in technical reviews and report writing of projects. [-] Less
