Nuclear Pharmacist:
Dispenses and compounds prescribed radioactive materials for use in nuclear medicine procedures, according to professional standards and state and federal regulatory requirements.
Obtains the desired radioactive material, either from a manufacturer, or from an in house generator system. Dispenses radioactive materials to a hospital, specialty clinic, or other nuclear medicine departments where the radiopharmaceutical will be administered to the patient. Provides drug information to other health professionals to aid the nuclear medicine staff in the selection of products and to assist in the interpretation of unusual studies. Uses procedures that minimize radiation exposure to themselves and to others. Reviews and monitors medication therapy and orders written by appropriate caregivers for safety and effectiveness considering specific patient conditions and health status. Maintains appropriate records of dispensing and oversees and maintains the systems that charge or credit for medications and medication treatments. Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs. Ensures that proper documentation is completed for all medications. Maintains all equipment and systems used in the preparation, oversight and dispensing of medications. Ensures that appropriate medications are available, ordered, prepared, stored and maintained. This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, certification or completion of an accredited clinical residency program, a current license, and training on the various radiopharmaceuticals that are used as well as training on the safe handling of radioactive materials.
