Waste Management Engineer: Develops, designs, implements, and examines systems and procedures to reduce volume and dispose of hazardous waste materials and contaminated objects. Oversees construction, testing, and implementation of waste disposal systems, and resolves operational problems. Designs and draws plans for systems to reduce volume of waste by solidification, compaction, or incineration. Excludes supervisory positions.
Identifies objects contaminated by exposure to hazardous waste, such as trash, workers' clothing, and discarded tools and equipment. Refers to State and Federal regulations and technical manuals to determine disposal method recommended for prevention of leakage or absorption of hazardous waste. Compares costs of transporting waste to designated hazardous waste disposal sites and reducing volume of waste and storing waste on plant site. Confers with equipment manufacturers' representatives and plant technical and management personnel to discuss alternatives and to choose most suitable plan on basis of safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness. Develops plans for modification of operating procedures to reduce volume and hazardous level of effluents, and writes manuals to instruct workers in changes in work procedures. Advises management on selection of lands suitable for use as hazardous waste disposal sites and on establishment of effective safety, operating, and closure procedures.
