Genetics Counselor
Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families in specified areas of clinical genetics, such as obstetrics, pediatrics, oncology, and neurology, to help them understand and adapt to birth defects or genetic disorders by providing them with information, education, and reassurance. Analyzes and interprets test results and genetic information from family histories, and identifies patients or families at risk for specific diseases, disorders, or syndromes, particularly as it applies to children. Advises patients or relatives of the risks, consequences, and nature of inherited disorders and diseases, the probability of developing or transmitting them, recurrence risks, and the options open to them in management and family planning. Conducts risk assessments and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis. Works with couples who want children to understand their in passing on certain birth defects or genetic disorders to their unborn children. Gains an in-depth understanding of the family history of each patient and thoroughly records the medical history of each patient, spending ample time evaluating the data. Determines or coordinates treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data. Explains diagnostic procedures, such ultrasound, fetal blood sampling, and amniocentesis. Assesses patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, financial issues, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes. Supports and counsels patients if they find out they or their children are at risk for certain genetic diseases or disorders, and helps them with more difficult aspects and findings. Provides support as patients go through extensive and sometimes invasive genetic tests.
