Conducts risk assessments and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis. Gains an in-depth understanding of the family history of each patient and thoroughly records the medical history of each patient, spending ample time evaluating the data. Determines or coordinates treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data. Explains diagnostic procedures, such ultrasound, fetal blood sampling, and amniocentesis. Assesses patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, financial issues, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes. Supports and counsels patients if they find out they or their children are at risk for certain genetic diseases or disorders, and helps them with more difficult aspects and findings.
