Designs and coordinates development of integrated geographical information system data base of spatial and non-spatial data; and develops analyses and presentation of this data, applying knowledge of geographic information systems. Meets with users to develop system or project requirements. Discusses specific problems to be solved, such as development of transportation planning and modeling, marketing and demographic mapping, or assessment of geologic and environmental factors. Recommends procedures to increase data accessibility and ease of use. Designs data base and coordinates physical changes to data base, applying additional knowledge of spatial feature representations, such as points, lines, polygons, and geographic information system. Reviews existing and incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, and documentation. Oversees entry of data into data base, including application of coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning and automatic conversion to vectors, and conversion of other sources of digital data. Determines or verifies designations of cartographic symbols. Determines nature of information to be queried, such as location, characteristics of location, trend, pattern, routing, and modeling various series of events. Determines and applies analysis procedures for spatial and non-spatial data. Determines how to analyze spatial relationships, including adjacency, containment, and proximity. Determines effective presentation of information and selects cartographic elements, including two-dimensional or perspective view, map projection, scale, color, shading, symbols, and additional elements, such as images, graphs, tables, and overlays.
