Job Description:
Generates photo or video images of soft-tissue objects inside the human body. Performs diagnostic sonographic examinations, utilizing appropriate ultrasonic equipment to produce high frequency sound waves which create diagnostic images of the human body for use in diagnosis of disease or organ malfunctions. Picks equipment for use in ultrasound setup according to specifications of examination. Specialized certification and completion of an approved course in medical sonography is typically required.: Explains process to patient, and assists and instructs patient in assuming physical position for the test. Selects transducer and adjusts equipment controls according to the nature of the test, depth of field, and other specifications of test. Enters test data and patient information into computer to become part of the test record. Conducts test procedure, moving transducer, by hand, over specified area of body and observing sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced. Records diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout, or film, and produces a permanent record of test result. Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician.
