Job Description:
Supervises and coordinates activities of employees engaged in shipping and receiving of products, components, and/or replacement parts and in verifying and keeping records on incoming and outgoing shipments, and preparing items for shipment. Oversees incoming and outgoing shipping activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and condition of shipments. Studies shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, orders, and other records to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates. Works with management to establish and modify department operational methods and procedures. This position typically reports to a manager and is the first level of supervision in the organization.: Ensures that goods are packaged and protected for shipping according to specifications. Determines space requirements and position of shipment in boxcars and trucks and lays out position of shipment. Determines routing and legal load limits of trucks, according to established schedules and weight limits of states. Inspects loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, and seals loaded boxcars and truck doors. Inspects material handling equipment for defects and notifies maintenance personnel or contacts outside service facility for repair. Maintains vehicle maintenance report. Directs movement of shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage and work areas. Maintains reports, records, and documentation to reflect department activities. Compiles records of unfilled orders. Prepares bills of lading. Prepares records for management and maintains appropriate shipping and receiving documentation. Posts weight and shipping charges. Analyzes performance of existing shipping and receiving systems, evaluating and recommending new programs to improve distribution methods and implement cost reductions. May hire, train, evaluate employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action.
