Job Description:

Counsels and guides people, such as young offenders, people with mental health conditions, school non-attenders, drug and alcohol abusers, people with learning and physical disabilities, homeless, and the elderly, through group experience to develop attitudes and social skills for improved family relations and community responsibility. Monitors the behavior of the clients in group settings, possibly living in a group home, which includes mediating disputes, removing dangerous things from client's possession, and counseling clients. Instructs clients in how to live independently, in group home settings, such as brushing teeth, preparing meals, or helping with medications. Prepares program content, arranges, and leads activities planned to enhance social development of individual members, and accomplishes group goals. Assess each client’s social and emotional capabilities, and plans group composition in relation to personal and social compatibility of members. Selects program appropriate to particular group goals, level of development, needs, capacities, and interests of group members. Involves members in planning and assuming responsibility for activities. Liaises between law enforcement, social services, client families, and other organizations in the community. Refers members, when necessary, to community resources and other organizations. Works in agencies such as community center, settlement house, youth serving organization, institution for children or aged, hospital, or penal institution. May work in collaboration with other professional disciplines. May secure supplemental information such as medical records and school reports. Most states require license or certificate. Less
