Job Description:

Schedules and coordinates the activities of the nurse anesthetists and engages in administering anesthetics to patients during surgical procedures. Administers local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics prescribed by Anesthesiologist to induce total or partial loss of sensation or consciousness in patients during surgery, deliveries, or other medical and dental procedures. Typically requires graduation from a professional nursing program and an approved school of nurse anesthesia, current registration as a professional nurse, certification by the AANA as a certified Nurse Anesthetist, and five year of experience in a surgical setting. Monitors the effects of specific anesthesia, drugs, techniques, and patient reactions. Develops, recommends, and implements procedures pertaining to the administration of anesthetics. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques. Prepares and manages the departmental budget. Hires, develops, and motivates a qualified staff of nurse anesthetists. Prepares patients for anesthesia to include explaining procedures and positioning patient on operating room table. Records condition of patient and type of anesthetic used on patient's chart. Determines set up and prepares necessary drugs, supplies, and equipment for the administration of anesthetics. Assembles gas machine and tests to insure proper functioning. Ensures availability of proper type blood for emergency use. Studies patient records to determine probable effects of anesthetic on patient; monitors vital signs during course of procedure. Closely monitors patient and modifies anesthesia as required to maintain patient at optimal levels. Notes patient's skin color and dilation of pupils and observes video screen and digital display of computerized equipment to monitor patient's vital signs during anesthesia.
