Job Description:
Identifies, removes, transports, and disposes of various hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead, and radioactive and nuclear materials.: Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools and equipment, depending on the work at hand and threat of contamination. May be designated Asbestos Abatement Worker and use vacuum to trap material. May be designated Lead Abatement Worker and use special chemicals, scrapers, sandblasters, and high-pressure water sprayers to remove material. May be designated Emergency and Disaster Response Worker and remove hazardous materials after train derailments and trucking accidents. May be designated Decontamination Technician and use brooms, mops, and other tools to clean exposed areas and remove exposed items for decontamination or disposal. May be designated Radiation Protection Technician and use radiation survey meters to locate and evaluate materials, operate high-pressure cleaning equipment for decontamination, and package radioactive materials for transportation or disposal. May be designated Decommissioning and Decontamination Worker and remove and treat radioactive materials generated by nuclear facilities and power plants, using a variety of hand tools. May be designated Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Worker and transport and prepare materials for treatment or disposal following strict procedures.
